The
Wonder Team's Miracle Season
75
years ago, baseball fans on the Eastern Shore witnessed one of the greatest
accomplishments in professional history. The Salisbury Indians, managed by Jake
Flowers, began the season with a 21-5 record but, due to an ineligible player on the roster, was forced to forfeit each of
those first 21 wins. That decision, handed by league president Thomas Kibler, dropped
the team from first place to last place in the Class D Eastern Shore League. Instead of
throwing away the season, they were determine to win it all.
They did so by finishing the season with 59 wins and 11 losses, and winning the league pennant. Counting the wins they had forfeited, this "wonder team" compiled a record of 80-16 for the season. To learn more about the Salisbury Indians, visit the Nabb Research Center at Salisbury University.
